Transitional jackets? What is she talking about? It’s still winter. In most parts of Europe, at least. Here in Berlin? One day it’s freezing with snow, the next it’s nine degrees and pouring rain. Truly the pinnacle of seasonal stability.

During my last outfit shooting session, I noticed something interesting while scrolling through the photos: in almost every single look, I was wearing a transitional jacket. Not just in spring. Not just in autumn. But essentially … year-round. Which raises a very important question: What is a transitional jacket, anyway?

There are about a thousand versions. They’re designed for the in-between seasons – that delicious grey area between deep winter and high summer, and again on the way back. And we love them all: leather jackets, trench coats, anoraks, chunky wool blazers, lighter wool coats, bomber jackets, maybe even your thickest cardigan if you’re feeling generous. A denim jacket absolutely qualifies.
